Lake of Sainte Croix
The lake of Sainte Croix, a wonderful artificial lake with crystal clear water, and edged with various beaches, is ideal for all sorts of water sports and recreational activities. The lake was created in 1973 when a dam was built in the River Verdon. At the same time, some of the villages in the valley were submerged. When the dam was under construction the old village of Les Salles-sur-Verdon was moved to higher ground. You can still see the old buildings 40 metres under the surface. The lake is around ten kilometres long and measures three kilometres at the widest point.
It is also the entrance to the awesome Gorge du Verdon.
